584 Extended VTE Prophylaxis in Patients Undergoing Oesophagogastric Cancer Surgery

Abstract Aim Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a life-threatening complication in cancer patients undergoing surgery. NICE recommends VTE-prophylaxis to 28days for major abdominal The efficacy of in-hospital well-documented, but the optimal duration postoperative remains controversial. Patients oesophagogastric surgery have higher risk VTE due suboptimal oral intake, dehydration, need adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Hence 2014, extended from hospital discharge (HD) was adopted as departmental policy. This study aims evaluate its effectiveness, prescribing compliance safety. Method 10-year retrospective July 2012-2022. All who underwent cardio-oesophagectomy or gastrectomy cancers were included. died during index admission, benign including excision GIST, central line associated excluded. primary outcome with 28-day prophylaxis HD. secondary includes incidence bleeding complications requiring readmission within Results 582 included our study. Since 423/490patients (86.3%) been discharged HD compared pre-2014 (13/92patients,14.1%). There statistically significant difference improving following introduction this policy (p<0.05). No patient readmitted complications. Only 1 (1/582,0.17%) developed Conclusions We recommend extending all improves compliance, reduces post-discharge safe.
